Mets 6, Blue Jays 5: Mets’ Win Doesn’t Come Easy

Mets 6, Blue Jays 5: Mets’ Win Doesn’t Come Easy Mark Blinch/Reuters Mike Baxter was greeted by Kirk Nieuwenhuis after scoring in the fifth. Baxter reached base four times and was a home run short of hitting for the cycle. TORONTO — With the Mets’ failure to take a lead at any point in the first two games of their series here, Frank Francisco, their closer, had not gotten an opportunity to pitch in front of the fans of the Blue Jays, his previous team. The chance came Sunday afternoon, when the Mets sent him to the mound to protect their one-run lead. As the crowd of 41,867 exhaled a thick stream of boos, the Mets seemingly held their breaths. Francisco, after all, had entered the game with an 8.04 earned run average and a collection of self-destructive outings. Another implosion seemed imminent when the first two batters to reached [...]

Cairo Journal: In Streets and Online, Campaign Fever in Egypt

Cairo Journal: In Streets and Online, Campaign Fever in Egypt CAIRO — “Good morning! Who are you going to vote for?” That is the new standard Egyptian salutation, said Shafiq Abdel Khaleq, 50, an engineer playing chess at a streetside cafe in the working-class Cairo neighborhood of Sayeda Zeinab. “There isn’t anyone left who doesn’t talk about politics,” he added, moving a piece. “But no one knows anything!” replied his opponent, Hussein Zayed, a 53-year-old importer, who then called checkmate. Three days before voting begins in the first competitive presidential election in the history of the Arab world, the combination of novelty, high stakes, suspense and confusion has infected Egypt with a case of campaign fever that makes World Cup soccer finals look tame by comparison, to say nothing of the predictably quadrennial two-party contests that Americans still call exciting. There are no reliable opinion polls here to help sort [...]

Obama bemoans not being allowed to have fun anymore

Obama bemoans not being allowed to have fun anymore Washington, May 21 (ANI): US President Barack has said that he missed a baseball match because he had to attend the NATO summit. Obama refuses to give any answer, when pool reporters questioned him after his joint statement with Hamid Karzai at Sunday’s summit. No, he said, wait for the Monday press conference, the Politico reported. But he could not maintain his silence when Sun-Times political reporter Abdon Pallasch asked him if he “had gone to the crosstown?” referring to the Cubs-White Sox series taking place at Wrigley, a few miles from the summit hall. “I missed it,” he replied with a ‘light smile,’ according to the foreign pool report. “They don’t let me have fun,” he added. But Hillary Clinton, who grew up in Cubs territory on the North Side, spent Saturday night at the ballpark with NATO dignitaries and [...]

Adele, LMFAO sweep tribute-filled Billboard awards Ethan Miller / Getty Images Contributor Redfoo and Sky Blu of LMFAO accept the Hot 100 Song of the Year award at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards Sunday night. By Piya Sinha-Roy, Reuters Energetic performances and heartfelt tributes took center stage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, as Adele, LMFAO, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift came away with the top awards. British Grammy-winning singer Adele won 12 awards from 18 nominations for her juggernaut album “21,” including top artist, top female artist and top album. Her awards were not presented during the live show and the singer was not present. But LMFAO, the uncle-nephew duo Redfoo and SkyBlu, showed in trademark outrageous fashion and picked up two awards, song of the year for “Party Rock Anthem” and the top duo/group, along with four more honors. Dutch court sentences preschool pedophile to 18 years plus psychiatric treatment

Dutch court sentences preschool pedophile to 18 years plus psychiatric treatment AMSTERDAM –  Judges have handed down an 18- year sentence, plus indefinite treatment in a psychiatric institution, to a pedophile who molested dozens of extremely young children in Amsterdam preschools and then shared videos and images of the acts on the Internet. The Latvian-born Dutch defendant, identified under the Netherlands’ privacy laws only as Robert M., has been dubbed “The Monster of Riga” by the national press. He was convicted of abusing 67 victims, though he confessed to more. Most were toddlers, but the youngest were infants, some only “weeks” old. The case deeply shocked the Netherlands when M. was arrested in December 2010, following a tip from American law enforcement authorities. Presiding judge Hans Bauduin said M’s expressions of remorse were not credible and gave them no weight in sentencing. Dutch court sentences preschool pedophile to 18 years [...]

Dufner wins Nelson for 2nd victory in 4 weeks

Dufner wins Nelson for 2nd victory in 4 weeks IRVING, Texas –  Jason Dufner stood on the 18th green, his lips together seemingly trying to suppress a smile while his playing partner finished the hole to end the Byron Nelson Championship. Dufner had already made a 25-foot birdie putt to win for the second time in four weeks. When J.J. Henry made the final putt Sunday, there was still no big outburst of emotion from the newly married Dufner after winning again. And there were no plans for any primal screams or chest bumps in private for the golfer who admittedly doesn’t get overly expressive very often. “Here and there a couple of times a year,” Dufner said. “Usually there is some alcohol involved or Auburn football, but for the most part I’m laid back.” That mentality paid off big at the Nelson, where Dufner was steady throughout. With that [...]
